Almost a quarter of a million people will cost your second or even third Christmas to unemployed people in the year, according to a study of TUC. More than a third of the 232 local authorities across the UK now has more than 1,000 bebore who have claim jobseekers (JSA) for at least 12 months. This compares with just 26 in December 2007.

"Across the country, thousands of people are struggling to find work, some of them for several years now. For their families, there will not be much to celebrate this Christmas, "said the TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber,. "The Government's major cuts in public spending will see thousands of public sector workers made redundant in the new year, and those who work in the private sector could be hit just as hard," he added.

Northern Ireland has experienced the sharpest increase in long-term unemployment over the past year with a 3.2% increase from 9,860 in December 2009 to 14,325.

Parts of Greater London has also been hard hit: Hackney, Kensington and Chelsea and Sutton – have suffered the greatest increases in the number of long-term job-seekers compensation claimants.

Susan, 32, has been unemployed since October 2009, when he returned to the United Kingdom after working as a regional manager for strategy and consulting for the Middle East and North Africa to one of the world's largest specialised information groups.

But when the job he had returned to the United Kingdom for – a £ 150,000 a year position as a senior consultant for a large management company – was cut, the graduate Cambridge University found themselves unemployed.

"I am desperate to work but I hear me Opfejning either over-qualified or did not have the appropriate experience, because I worked overseas," he said. "I have been reduced to living a brutal, short-term existence, hope anyone by charity I volunteer at will buy me lunch or offer me a cup of coffee. I go past the homeless and know that there is a genuine possibility I could end up there, too. "

Total long-term unemployment, including those who do not have to claim THE JSA, rose to 839,000 in October 2010, an increase of 34% on the year and the highest level since February 1997. Unemployed than vacancies, with more than five to one in many areas throughout the United Kingdom.

A study of Catch22, a charity for young people, have found that almost one out of five 16-24 year-olds are unemployed. They say that ending future employment Fund (FJF) a year early and does not give an immediate replacement program will force young people have to wait three months before they get a chance to work.
