DAYTON – number of long-term unemployed is the highest since Department of Labor began tracking these numbers in 1948. Overall, 6.1 million unemployed workers – or about 40 percent of the nation is more than 15 million unemployed – have been without work for six months or longer.

As amazing as these figures sound, there is no indication that they will change any time soon. Government figures released Friday showed the economy is just more 39 000 jobs in November — considerably less than the 150 000 jobs as analysts had expected — while the unemployment rate climbed to 9.8%.

"Jobs are like musical chairs," said Cleveland-based economist George Zeller. "When there are fewer chairs, not sitting."

Miamisburg resident Steve Leno knows this very well. He has been unemployed since March 2009 when he was released after 15 years as head of sales and operations for a heating and cooling company.

"Statistically, the longer you remain unemployed, the longer it takes to find a job," said Bruce Yandle, an economist at George Mason Mercada Center at the University.
